July 4th Stuff

Dear Pink ::

 

Last year I had my family over for the 4th of July. It was our family reunion a few days after the 4th so many of us got together because my hometown does a great parade and fireworks. Here are two crazy cheap things I did to add to the festivites.

 

 

I couldn't find any cute paper plates that I liked. (No offense to allose wavy stars and stripes plate designers out there) So I went to the dollar store and got red, white and blue plates. They are kind of flimsy, I know, good for cake & ice cream but not much else. So I put my decorative scissors to work and trimmed the color plates down and glued them to a white plate. Cheap. Sturdy. Festive. And my family only thought I was slightly insane.

This is not a great photo but it's the only one I have. I recommend if you are recreating this to use the white plate as the under plate because sometimes the color plate doesn't cut very well and you have a white edge showing that the white background plate hids. I'm thinking this is cute for showers, birthdays, graduations, etc. This year my dollar store had some cute square red check plates. (happy dance)

 

 

I'm sure you have seen these Tissue Puff thing too, Pink. I just love how easy and cheap they are to make. I got the tissue from WalMart. And followed Martha's instuctions. (Click here for them) I cut my ends pointy not rounded so they looked like fireworks. They looked cute under my umbrella.

The rest of my photos from the holiday were of people who look kinda like me stuffing food into their mouths or power napping. Hmmm. Mental note to document other happenings on the 4th this year.

I have the cutest neighbor boy ever who is 9.  The other day I took my black fan, that did not blend well with everything else in my house painted white and decided to spray paint it "vanilla". 

I was in my garage and he came over and said, "Why do you paint everything in your house white?" (note my $25.00 Goodwill mirror, also painted white)

I thought it was so funny as what 9 year old must think about the crazy lady who seriously does paint almost anything white, or a light cream.

Card Group

Dear Think::

 

Ok, Ok, I know what you are going to say, so I will say it for you.

"WHAT you joined a CARD GROUP?  Where you have to make 12 new cards every month and then exchange them! Then you have to go back next month and do it again, and again! ARE you CRAZy!" 

Yes it is true I am CRAZY, but also a little lonely.  I thought this would be a great way to step out of my comfort zone and meet some new people. 

On Saturday we will have lived in Colorado for one whole year!  We love this place and skiied almost every weekend this past winter.  We don't miss the humidity on the East coast but do miss the green trees (poor Colorado thinks this place is green, I don't have the heart to tell them they don't know what they are missing) and of course we miss our friends. But all and all we love Colorado and hope it will forever be our home.

So, back to my card group.  Every month we have a theme and this month is Black and White.  We can make anything with the colors Black and White. 

I am the rebel in the group (self proclaimed) and decided to make gift tags.  Here is what I made and how I did it.

First thing you must know is I love the Graphics Fairy Blog. Love it, love it, love it.  Here is her 2clever shout out!

I used her antique apothecary label.  Click here to go directly to it on her site. 

I printed four to a sheet on heavy, heavy watercolor paper.  (did you know I have two printers.  One just to print out that heavy cool paper. )

The other supplies I used were

• My Mind's Eye, Lime Twist gray and white twine
• Martha Stewart's fine point glue
• Recollections Tinsel Glitter (LOVE THIS STUFF!)  This can be found at Michael's Craft Store
• and a little tool that roughens up the edges of the paper (have no idea what it is called)

 

 

 

 

I cut out each circle by hand, then roughed up the edges with that razor blade tool (I will have to ask the group what it is called, I am such a rookie)

Added little dots of the glue, sprinkled the tinsel glitter on, punched a hole (with the mini hole punch of course those big hole punches are so not me) and then tied on the darling striped string.

 

This might be kind of fun to show you what everyone else does and then go back and show you my other themes we have had.

Well. on a non crafty note.  This is fun to get back together again on 2clever.  I have really missed it and now that we are both finally settled after our big moves we finally have the time to get these clever ideas out of our head and share with our very patient eavesdroppers (we love you eavesdroppers)

Surprise! A new post!!!

Pink :: Are you shocked I actually did it?!

A post from me after what...a year or more? I just wanted to share this cute idea for a teacher gift. I know you might be out of school already or at least figured out your teacher gift, but file this one away for another year. I actually did this for Little Think's teacher for Christmas.

 

I sent out an email to all the parents asking them to find out what their child liked about Mrs. P. Then I took a few of the "best ones" and ironed them on with iron transfer paper to a $8.99 tote bag from Hobby Lobby. (I know you would have sewn your own fabulous bag but you know all about my long and storied history with sewing....)

It was a bit tricky ironing into the tight spaces around the handles but it turned out okay. I used all different fonts so it was like each child saying it in their own voice. The black flower was a hair clip that I snaped on to gussy it up a bit. I have no idea how it held up in the long run but the teacher loved. It even made her cry which is like the gold medal of gift giving in my book.

 

I had so many other cute quotes from the kids that I typed them up and but the kids names around the outside. I printed it on nice paper and framed it out in a black $6.99 frame. I told Mrs. P to put it where she would see it everyday and know what a difference she was making everyday.

Hopefully it won't take another year for me to post again but you never know....

 

Happy Last Day of Schooling! :: Think

I may have done you a little disservice by telling you I was going to the Mountains in Virginia - you may have envisioned a tent and bug repellent picture.  Well it is a little more like this

Oh my, even I had no idea of what an amazing place I was headed to for the week.  It is historic, full of antiques, every piece of furniture is custom upholstered and it is amazingly relaxing.  Here are just a few things we have done this week and we have not traveled more than half a mile.

• ice skating
• smores by the fire
• swimming
• golf
• fishing
• bowling
• bingo
• shopping
• gone to the movies
• chess, checkers and wooden puzzles
• hot tubbing
• we still have paintball, 2 Easter egg hunts, family crafts, magician and Easter Brunch to look forward to.

I took the historic tour today (i was the only one in the tour and it was wonderful).  I took a ton of photos for the blog because I knew you would love this place.  This resort built in 1766 - any idea of where I am?

Pink :: I know it's not very Easter-y

But it works! And that makes me very "hoppy".  Ha!

Kind of gross to use so wear gloves but I like it better than pouring tons of $$$ chemicals down the drain every few months. I laughed at the hanger hook thingy they have with it. Like I want that hanging anywhere in my house where I have to look at it! Got mine at Bed Bath & Beyond for $9.99 and I think it's at other stores so don't buy it online and pay shipping.

I know.... a lame post. But at least I'm posting something, right? That should tell you about my life these days....I've got a Clever Clog in my brain. Got anything to turbo snake that out with?
